As summer approaches, it is time to make sure your grass is getting the water it needs to stay healthy and green. But, if you don’t water your lawn correctly, it can do more harm than good. When it comes to watering your lawn, there are a few Dos and Don’ts you should keep in mind.
Let’s start with the do’s. First, the best time to water your lawn is in the morning, before the sun is hot and likely to evaporate the water. This allows the water to soak in deeply and reach the
grass’s roots. It is also best to water your lawn more often, but in short bursts; two to three times a week is ideal. This helps the water penetrate deeper into the soil and root system of the grass, so you need less water in a session to properly hydrate your lawn.
When watering your lawn, it is also essential to ensure that you are providing the grass with an even amount of water. This should be accomplished by not having the water run off or pool in any one area. To avoid this, you can opt to water the lawn in multiple areas in one session.
Now, let’s discuss the don’ts. One of the most important is to not water your lawn during the hottest parts of the day, in particular the afternoon and evening. By watering at these times, you will quickly lose water to evaporation and runoff. In addition, avoid over-watering your lawn by not exceeding an inch of water per week. Too much water can drown the grass and create a breeding ground for fungus or other lawn problems. Finally, you should avoid using a hose without a timer and never set your sprinkler system to water your lawn for too long.
Watering your lawn not only provides essential hydration for your grass, but it can also be quite therapeutic. By following the basics, you can make sure your lawn is properly hydrated and flourishing this summer.
